Defeat is not an option for either Tottenham or Liverpool as both sides'
Barclays Premier League ambitions reach a critical point in the season.
WHAT IS WRONG WITH LIVERPOOL'S HOME FORM?
Second-placed Spurs can cut Leicester's lead
at the top of the table to two points before the Foxes play Southampton
on Sunday, while Liverpool surely need a win to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
We look at five talking points ahead of the pivotal clash at Anfield.
POCHETTINO MUST BE BRAVE
Tottenham have seven games left to close a
five-point gap on Leicester but this weekend is the last time Mauricio
Pochettino's side will play before the league leaders. It gives Spurs
the opportunity to put pressure on the Foxes but it also means
Pochettino has a tactical dilemma to address. If Leicester go on to
lose, a draw at Anfield would represent a decent result, but Spurs have
to assume Claudio Ranieri's side will pick up another three points. If the game is in the balance in the second half, Pochettino must risk defeat and pile forward for victory.
WILL DIER HOLD BACK?
Tottenham's
only holding midfielder is one yellow card away from a two-match ban,
which could seriously harm his side's title hopes. If he is booked, Eric
Dier will miss tough games against Manchester United and Stoke, with
Spurs lacking any obvious player to take his place. A frantic contest
between two high-energy teams
is expected at Anfield and Dier may find it counter-productive to be
cautious - but Tottenham do need their midfield general during the
run-in. If Liverpool pour forward on the counter-attack, will Dier still
make the challenge?
WHAT IS WRONG WITH LIVERPOOL'S HOME FORM?
Just
one win in four league matches at Anfield in 2016 - five all season -
speaks volumes about a side who are not yet entirely confident carrying
out Jurgen Klopp's instructions. Performances have often been tentative
and timid, not helped by an anxious Anfield atmosphere, and when they
lead they cannot close out matches as shown when even struggling
Sunderland came back from 2-0 down in the last 10 minutes. Tottenham
have picked up just nine points from the last possible 63 at Liverpool's
home ground but pose an altogether different threat this term.
AND AS FOR THE REDS' DEFENCE...
Liverpool
have kept just two clean sheets in their last 10 league matches as
inconsistencies at the back continue to dog them. The central
partnership of Mamadou Sakho and Dejan Lovren looked to have clicked
only for the latter to struggle last time out at Southampton. He was
substituted at half-time but his replacement Martin Skrtel had a
personal nightmare as Saints scored three times to win 3-2. Left-back
Alberto Moreno has been unconvincing this season but Klopp has few
alternatives. Spurs have scored more goals than any other side in the
league so far and will be looking to capitalise.
BATTLE OF THE PRESSERS
There
are distinct similarities between Pochettino and Klopp, with both
managers urging their teams to hunt in packs in their opponents' half
while squeezing the space with a high defensive line. It is a system
that requires excellent levels of fitness
and, given Liverpool have dropped the most points (15) from winning
positions in the division this term, they are perhaps still short,
having not enjoyed the benefit of a pre-season under their new boss.
Tottenham have certainly been more convincing but defeats last month to
West Ham and Borussia Dortmund, both physical and highly energetic
sides, showed they can be vulnerable when taken on at their own game.
But if the Reds take the lead, can they hold on?

Judge Merrick Garland may not be out of the woods yet when it comes to his Supreme Court nomination, but at least he has Taylor Swift to help him shake it off in the meantime.
At a Politico "Playbook Breakfast" event in DC Friday morning, White House senior adviser Brian Deese said the nomination process has taught him one important thing about Garland: that he's a big fan of the pop icon's music.
"I've now found out Judge Garland is also reasonably into Taylor Swift," he said.
Asked whether Garland sings along to Swift's songs, Deese quipped: "That's why we have hearings."
Deese's comments come as the White House has been pushing hard for Senate Republicans to give Garland a formal hearing. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has repeatedly said that the Senate will not consider Obama's nominee for the Supreme Court, a position that's causing some bad blood between him and the White House.
The White House adviser added that Garland has met with 10 Senators this week, and will meet with another 11--including Republicans Susan Collins and John Boozman--next week.
As for the chances that Garland will get a hearing, Neil Eggleston, the White House counsel, said: "We think we're making progress on this, and we think we've got a very good chance."

The Model 3 will cost 35,000 dollars (£24,423) and have a range of at
least 215 miles (346km) per charge, the company's chief executive, Elon
Musk, said. PA
Tesla Motors has unveiled its Model 3 sedan at a glitzy event in Los Angeles, the fourth production car to be released by Elon Musk's electric car company.
Only hours after the big reveal, over 115,000 pre-orders had been made for the lower-priced Model 3, Tesla claimed.
It's 'cheap'
Well, it's comparatively
cheap. A Model S, Tesla's higher-end saloon, starts at £58,500 and goes
up to £87,300 for the fastest version. The Model X, the company's
electric SUV, is expected to start at £65,000 when it launches in the
UK.
By comparison, the cheapest Model 3 will cost
$35,000. That comes out to around £25,000 at current exchange rates,
below the average price for a new car in the UK, although the actual
price may vary slightly.
The Model 3
will make Tesla cars affordable for more people, and judging by the
popularity of their other vehicles, they could sell quickly.
Race Into A Career In Motorsports, With Or Without A College DegreeIt'll go 215 miles on a single charge
That's
the mileage on the basic model, according to Musk. More expensive
versions of the Model 3 will likely have bigger batteries, increasing
their range.
By comparison, Nissan's £26,500 30kWh Leaf gets 155 miles on a single charge.
The
Model 3 might still not be practical for cross-country road trips, but
for the price it blows other electric cars out the water when it comes
to mileage.
It's fast
Musk said the base model will do 0-60mph in less than six seconds, although pricier versions will go quicker.
Tesla dispelled a lot of the stereotypes about
electric cars going slow with the Model S, and clearly they're trying
to keep some of that in the Model 3.
You might actually be able to charge it on the road
The
main thing holding electric cars back is the lack of charging points.
Tesla knows this, which is why it's planning to expand its network of
'Supercharging' stations worldwide.
The
Superchargers are power points which can fully charge Tesla cars in
minutes, not hours. They're capable of charging the Model X's 90kWh
battery from dead to 100 per cent in 75 minutes, so it's fair to assume
that the Model 3's smaller battery will charge quicker.
It's still not as fast as filling a tank up
with petrol, but a half-hour pit stop on a long trip isn't an enormous
inconvenience. There's around 30 Supercharger stations spread across the
UK, but Tesla wants to increase this number by the time the car
launches.
